Chicago - Shopping on Michigan Avenue (Magnificant Mile) and ending up at the Taste of Chicago in Grant park. There are some high-end shops but the majority of the stores are for regular people and it really creates a great family friendly atmosphere just for browsing around.
New York - I know this may sound crazy but with all there is to do in NY., the one thing I remember the most is eating at a 5th floor Applebee's.
